The 1999 Action Craft 18SE is a standout in the world of technical flats boats, prized for its ability to handle "skinny" water while still providing a remarkably dry and stable ride in open bays. It is often referred to as the "four-wheel drive" of the flats because of its rugged build and versatility.

The Qui-Dry Hull
The most famous feature of this boat is the patented Qui-Dry hull design. It uses a unique stepped-transom and modified-V shape that serves two purposes: it deflects spray downward to keep you dry in a chop, and it eliminates the "hull slap" of waves hitting the side. This silence is a massive advantage when you are poling through a flat trying not to spook sensitive fish like bonefish or permit.

Angler-Focused Layout
The 18SE was built for serious fishing. The deck is designed to be completely flush, meaning there are no cleats or hinges to trip over or snag a fly line.

Casting Space: You get huge, unobstructed casting platforms on both the bow and the stern.

Livewells: It features a high-performance, aerated livewell system in the rear deck that is oversized for a boat of this length, making it a favorite for tournament anglers.

Rod Storage: The "Special Edition" trim includes deep under-gunwale rod racks that provide protection for long saltwater fly rods or heavy spinning tackle.

Draft and Maneuverability
Even with its aggressive hull shape, the 18SE can float in about 10 to 12 inches of water. It responds very well to a push pole, tracking straight even in a breeze, which is rare for a boat that can also handle a rough bay crossing.

Power and Performance
In the late 90s, these were frequently paired with 115hp to 150hp outboards. When rigged with a 150hp engine, the 18SE is a "rocket," easily hitting speeds in the 50-mph range. Its ability to jump onto a plane in very shallow water—thanks to the hull's lifting design—makes it ideal for navigating the backcountry.

Overall Reputation
Decades later, the 1999 Action Craft 18SE remains a highly collectible boat in the Florida keys and coastal marshes. It’s known for a heavy-duty, hand-laid fiberglass construction that holds up against years of sun and salt, maintaining a "solid" feel that many modern, ultra-lightweight skiffs lack.
